Synonyms in search engines

Synonyms (or words or phrases with the same meaning) are a common and important phenomenon in all natural languages. Therefore, good search engines should understand this phenomenon on as many levels as possible and exploit it for the benefit of humans. Synonymy exists at the level of individual words, longer names (multi-word expressions), and entire idioms. A few examples of synonyms:Illustration for understanding.

If a search engine recognizes synonyms, it can perform significantly more comprehensive searches than standard search engines. It delivers more relevant search results.
